Noordwijk dunes are a special European protected area, designated a Natura 2000 area. Most of the nature areas are open all year round, and offer no end of opportunities for cycling and walking. What a perfect setting for a walk, a bike ride or even horse riding. Various walking and cycling routes are available free of charge from the Visitor Centre. Another option is to walk or cycle with a guide who knows the way and has prepared a route for you.
Walking & Nordic Walking
Of course you can walk along the beach, but the dune area also offers plenty of options. An extensive network of paths takes walkers through coniferous woodlands and the open dune fields, with surprising vistas and views. There are paths to take you over the highest ridges for example, with views of the North Sea on one side and the bulb fields behind you. Keep your eyes open and you might see a fox, deer, roe deer or squirrels. In spring, nightingales can be heard all around.
Cycling & mountain biking
There are many cycle paths and cycling routes in the area, including paths through the dunes to Zandvoort and Katwijk. Mountain bikers will have the time of their lives here. A twisting and hilly path has been laid out for them through the coniferous woodlands of the Northern dunes.
